City of Letters

As the World Book Capital and as a city which loves words, Antwerp will meet the challenge to make all the letters of the alphabet visible all over the city. Each letter represents a beginning. The beginning of a word, a phrase, a conversation, a story, a book, a world...

ABC2004 will ask 26 different duos consisting of an author and a artist from another discipline (the arts, fashion, photography, music, dance, ...) to work with one of the letters of our alphabet. The 26 duos will create a world in which the given letter becomes a beginning.
Fifty-two people, twenty-six creations, a new alphabet, which will treasure diversity. The duos will consist of artists and authors from all over the world. Guest artists include: Tom Lanoye and artist Fred Eerdekens (letter a), Germaine Greer and fotographer Elke Boon (letter b), Toon Tellegen en Stef Kamil Carlens (letter c), Leonard Nolens with carver Kristoffel Boudens, Pascale Platel and designer Michael Young, Simon Vinkenoog and the designer duo Weyers en Borms, Anne Provoost and knife forgerer Antoine van Loocke (letter i).

The creations will be presented to the public throughout the year. The creative process and the final result of each duo will be presented in a cahier or book. These books and the creations based on the A,B, and C will be presented during the opening performance of ABC2004 on 7 and 8 May at the Bourla Theatre. After ABC2004 the city on the river Scheldt will inherit a new alphabet, one that can be felt, seen and read around the city.
